Bears vs. Cardinals: September 23, 2018

Des: Welcome to another edition of the Chicago Bears football pre-game show. The Bears face off against the Cardinals after a hard fought win against the Seahawks, a hollow, depleted husk of its once-mighty self. Will the Bears take advantage of a yet another lackluster team? And will anyone watch the Bears when you could watch the Cubs play the White Sox for the last game featuring legendary Sox broadcaster Hawk Harrelson?

To answer these and similar questions is our panel of experts: Concord Wainwright Peabody, Captain Silas Charles “Sweet Release” Red-beard, Modre, the trans-logical guru, the Prissy Minion, Doctor Sally McChesty, Ellie Mae McGillicutty, former Bears Coach Marc Trestman, and the technicolor shamblings of Drunky McDumbAss.

Redbeard: ARRRH, mateys! Once again, it be time for me to reveal my predictions for today’s game. So, after consuming a cocktail called “Bilge Swill” and crashing through the hollow hull of my pirate ship, only to be rescued by the watery hand of the Lady of the Lake, who inscribed today’s predictions with the mystic sword Excalibur, first upon my termite-infested peg leg, then when she ran out of room, on my sea water rusted hook for a hand, and then finally upon my pleated brow, which I will read using a shattered mirror broken upon the skull of many a foe, but mostly Aquaman. I have done many a team up with Black Manta, who still has the scariest voice ever heard on a late 1970s cartoon. Anyone who has watched the “Challenge of the Superfriends” knows what I’m talking about. Oh, yes: what will be the outcome of today’s game? The Bears will defeat the Cardinals 28-6, with the defense scoring all four touchdowns. Also, yrujni gnidne nosaes a evah lliw yksiburt.

Des: Concord Peabody. What are you bringing to the table today?

Concord: Des, even though nobody heeded my multiple quarterback strategy last week, I’m back again to provide another ritualistic coaching strategy you should follow even when it makes absolutely no sense to do so. And here it is: Starting pitchers should pitch exactly 100 pitches per game. No more, no less. I don’t care if the pitcher is working on a no-hitter, if he’s down by 20 runs, if both shoulders are dislocated, or if his clothes have been knocked off by a line drive a la Charlie Brown. 100 pitches.

Des: Thank you, Concord. Drunky, even though I pride myself on not asking a question unless I’m prepared to hear the answer, what, uh, what is happening?

Drunky McDumbAss: I was enjoying myself tailgating at a bar called “Slumpy’s.” Except it turned out to be a mattress store called “Sleepy’s.”

Des: Prissy Minion. Make me feel better about myself.

Prissy Minion: Oh, Des. You have the bubbly effervescence of an Alka Seltzer commercial sung by Sammy Davis, Jr.

Des: …which I have in my music collection somewhere, thanks to occasional friend of the blog Stronger Than Dirt Pete Moss.

Sally: Sit back and watch, sports fans, as the Bears do battle in a game that will mathematically eliminate one or both teams in the third week of the season.

Bears vs Cardinals: 9-20-2015

Des: Welcome to another edition of the Chicago Bears football pre-game show. The Bears face off against the Cardinals after a loss that enabled the Monsters of the Midway to experience less shame. We’re not quite up to “pride” yet. Will the Bears continue their glacial rebuilding with Robbie Gould’s mighty leg, a defense that can keep opponents under 20 points, and a coach who can keep Cutler down to one game-changing interception per outing? Or will today’s game provide late morning entertainment to the home team fans watching their local heroes battle it out while enjoying a senior citizens’ discount at the Golden Corral buffet?

To answer these and similar questions is our panel of experts: Concord Wainwright Peabody, Captain Silas Charles “the Floronic Man” Red-beard, Modre- the trans-Western guru, the Prissy Minion, Doctor Sally McChesty, Ellie Mae MacGillicutty, and scorpion bowl casualty, Drunky McDumbAss.

Redbeard: ARRRH, mateys! Before I unscroll me Treasure Map to the Super Bowl, I have to ask: Why “the Floronic Man” Redbeard? Usually I ignore the obscure cultural references ye pointlessly tack onto me name, but this be a new low, even for you: Why would my nickname be the least popular supervillain of the least popular DC Comics—let’s call him a “character”, the word “super-hero” doesn’t really fit--Swamp Thing?

Des: That question answers itself, doesn’t it?

Redbeard: No.

Des: Okay, then.

Des: Redbeard, don’t you have some sort of map you were going to tell us about?

Redbeard: Yes, with the latitudes and the longitudes and the what have you. Also sexy drawings of mermaids with enlarged….ahhhhhh…, uh, I mean, ARRRRHHHH!!!

Here be Captain Redbeard’s Treasure Map to the Super-Bowl!!! In the AFC, I foresee the Bills, Bengals, Texans, and Chiefs celebrating divisional championships, whilst the Patriots and Broncos enter the playoffs as wild cards. In the NFC, I envision that the Lions, Eagles, Saints, and Cardinals will dominate their divisions. The Cowboys and Packers will be tainted with the dishonor of entering as wild cards. Tremble with fear as I reveal this startling denouement to the 2015 football season: The Bengals will defeat the Cardinals in the first Super Bowl between two teams who enter with a 7-9 record, whilst the Falcons, with a 13-3 record, won’t even make the playoffs.

Des: Captain, unlike every stock market advice show on CNBC, I have to point out your multitude of errors. Last year, the Cowboys were your only successful pick in the NFC and the Steelers were the only team keeping you from a shutout in the AFC. And your Super Bowl picks? The 49ers were 8-8 and Jim Harbaugh is coaching Michigan, while the Chiefs were only slightly more respectable with a 9-7 record.

Redbeard: Des, ye lugubrious lackey of a land-lubber! I defy ye to find a better sports prognosticator than the “Salty Sea-Dog of Sports.” And I mean I literally defy ye! As in, “If ye touch a key stroke to look this up on Google, I will cut off both your hands with me steely blade and use them on me scary sports Ouija board to pick next week’s winners!”

Des: “Lugubrious?” Are you sure you didn’t mean “glug, glug, glug-ree-us?” By which I mean “Time now for Drunky McDumbAss.” What’s happening out there in Tailgate Land? Or County Jail?

Drunky: Har-de-har-fuck you, Des! I’m doing neither. At this very moment, I’m about to shoot about a dozen or so commercials as the “before” guy for every drug addiction center in the country. USA! USA!

Des: Concord Peabody. What are your thoughts?

Concord: Well, Des, the order of operations that sorts out what teams win and what obsessive-compulsive mathematical card-counting jerk beats me every year in what some call a “Fantasy Football League”, but for me is nothing but an endless nightmare of heartbreak and bankruptcy, uh, would tend to tell you that the Bears should lose, but for me, who picks teams with my heart and therefore creates a pot of gold for gamblers with some sort of reality-based strategy, I say: Bears win: 45-7!

Des: Wow. That’s really bringing you down to Des-boy McGillicutty and Drunky McDumbAss level as the panelists with the most depressing existence. Modre. This year’s retooling of your character has you commenting on Donald Trump’s presidential campaign. Give it to me, please.

Modre: “He who most loudly denies reality defines reality.” That is either Donald Trump’s campaign slogan or the worst Depeche Mode song ever.

Des: Prissy Minion. Go.

Prissy Minion: Des, your football blog is about more than x’s and o’s, which, when I say it, takes on a totally different meaning. But I digress. No, whenever I read your posts, I hear this wondrous tapestry of ones and zeros crackling over a 1970s phone modem at my public library that I accidently pick up when I’m trying to call my time travelling Uber Taxi only to find Drunky McDumbAss trying to make a few extra bucks in between drive-thru liquor stores.

Des: Prissy, when you make these extended valentines to me, do you just listen to NPR for 90 consecutive hours to extract its pure essence and then scrawl it on a post card?

Prissy Minion: (Taps his nose)

Des: That’s a nice scene from The Trojan Women on the front side of the post card.

Des: Ellie Mae McGillicutty. What southern fried wisdom do you have for us today?

Ellie Mae: Des, I’m tired of your mockery of the sons and daughters of the south. Haven’t you learned anything from famed cartoonist Garry Trudeau, who admonished Charlie Hebdo for “punching down”? Always punch up, Des!

Des: Like Doonesbury in the early 1970s, with Boopsie Boopstein and Rufus “Thor” Jackson?

Des: Speaking of stereotypical eye candy, here’s Sally McChesty. Would you finish this off for us?

Sally: With extreme pleasure, Desikowski. Are there two “r’s” in “harassment”?

Des: It depends on whether you pronounce it “ha-rass-ment” or “hair-rus-ment.”

Bears vs. Cardinals: 12-23-2012

BEARS VS CARDINALS: 12-23-2012

Des: Welcome to another edition of the Chicago Bears football pre-game show. The Bears face off against their arch-nemesis the Arizona Cardinals after eliminating themselves from the playoffs last week. Will the Bears manage to win their last two games against mediocre teams? And will this be enough to save Coach Lovie Smith’s job? To answer these and similar questions is our panel of experts: Concord Wainwright Peabody, Captain Silas Charles “The Silence” Redbeard, Modre the trans-Western guru, the Prissy Minion, and puff-piece maestro, Sally McChesty.

SR: ARRRH, mateys! Once again, the Bears suffer yet enough late season decline and collapse. I’ve not seen this sort of slow degradation since the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, British, Soviet, and possibly… American… empires. What must the Bears do? If history must be misapplied again to an irrelevant context, I would say, in chronological order, avoid used lead plumbing, build better defenses against the Turks and the Crusaders, don’t rely on a army of slaves, avoid the perils of nationalism if you have a multi-ethnic empire that’s in the way of two other empires, don’t over-extend a sea-based empire and try to avoid being bankrupted by two world wars, don’t enact sweeping reforms without developing a broad base of support, and don’t over-borrow from the Chinese. Although, in truth, the Bears just need a better offensive line.

Des: Concord Peabody. Who will win today’s game?

CWP: Des, the Bears are 75-42 against teams in cities where the average age of its residents is a hundred and nineteen, nineteen, na na na na, nineteen, nineteen.

Des: All those who remember that reference, they won’t forget what they’ve seen. Destruction of comedy in its prime…

SR: None of us will receive a hero’s welcome, either. And rightfully so. Season’s beatings, ye wretched land-lubbers!

Bears vs. Cardinals: 11-8-09

BEARS VS. CARDINALS: 11-8-09

Des: Welcome to another edition of the Chicago Bears football pre-game show. The Bears face off against their cross-town rivals, the Arizona Cardinals. Will the Bears be able to make their offense function smoothly, like a well-oiled machine? Or will they fly apart into a million pieces, like the infamous aluminum engines of the 1974 Chevy Vega?

To respond to these and similar obscure, poorly constructed metaphors is our panel of experts: Concord Wainwright Peabody, Captain Silas Charles “Livingston Seagull” Red-beard, Modre the trans-Western guru, the Prissy Minion, and famed dead celebrity Kurt Cobain.

SR: ARRRH, mateys! Though the Bears emerged victorious against the hapless Cleveland Browns, ‘tis too soon to crown them Super-bowl champions. What must the Bears do to win the NFC North? I suggest the “bilge rat” pass rush defense, where ye swarm all over the quarterback like a pack of… well, ye gets the idea. This would be particularly effective against the “Cheese-head” Green Bay Packers.

Des: Concord Peabody. Your thoughts.

CP: The Bears’ smothering defense and suffocating kickoff return coverage remind me of the time I worked for the "waste management business" and...

Des: Modre. What should the Bears do?

Modre: George Bernard Shaw once said, “For every complex problem, there is a simple solution that is wrong.” Still, I recommend using the "Wildcat" offense.

Des: Kurt Cobain. Your thoughts.

KC: “If you ever need anything please don't hesitate to ask someone else first."

Des: Okay, then. Prissy Minion. Your final thought.

PM: Oh, Des. Bears Sunday without your broadcasts is like a broken pencil--- pointless.

Des: Sit back and watch as the Bears grapple in a game brought to you by the return of "V: the Visitors", which is in no way connected to this show, even though I've used their theme song for 5 years.
